We woke up had breakfast. We met our tour guide who was a little old woman who gave us all little booklets and maps to the city. We walked all over town and walked across the York Wall. I really don't know what to call it but it was pretty cool
I just realized I didn't do a good job taking pictures of the wall itself. Oops. Above is York Minster taken from the wall.
After the tour around the city Suki (my teacher) took those who wanted to come on a tour of York according to a book we read in class, Behind the Scenes at the Museum. The tour was okay but then we went to the York Castle Museum which was really cool. The first part of the museum had artifacts from late 1700's to about 1950's. It had a street that was designed to look like how a street would look in England in the 1800's. They also had different helmets we could try on so I tried on a knight's helmet and a helmet from WWI
After the first half of the museum Suki took us to the other side that had objects from the sixties and a jail with cells we could walk into and read about what happened in that cell and who had been in there. The second half was really small (It took about half an hour or less to get through) and we met up in the small 60's exhibit. Suki was disappointed that the museum was being renovated because we were supposed to have an epiphany about the title of the book. She had to tell us and it was very anti-climatic.
One thing I forgot to mention. Between the tours we grabbed lunch and I got a delicious ham and stuffing sandwhich and an éclair!
Yea this baby was gone in seconds
Jake, Michael, and I had nothing to do and were really tired from walking around so we went back to the hotel for about 2 hours and relaxed then went out for dinner. This is one reason I was disappointed with York: We could not find a place to eat because everything was closed down at 630! We resorted to a fish and chips place called Mr. Chippers. I was excited to have my first fish ad chips plate but I was extremely disappointed! It was no very good at all! The fish tasted like grease a little so yea.
I was going to meet up with the girls but they had just sat down to a meal at a sit-down so I decided t go down by the river and wait for them. Elva and Sarah came with me and it was very pleasant actually. We sat there with our feet hanging over the water watching the ducks swim around and saw the sunset across the river (I have pictures but they are on my phone and for some reason I cannot load them on here!). We decided to leave and headed back to the hotel were everyone else met up in our room again and we had another hang-out in our hotel room.
Saturday 4/5
We woke up had breakfast. Our tour guide met us at York Minster this time. York Minster as beautiful. I will just upload pictures to show you what it was like.
I realize I took a lot of pictures of the ceiling but honestly it was probably my favorite part because it was so intricate. (Mom! Reading The Pillars of the Earth makes me really appreciate these churches and cathedrals) Also some of these are crooked because for some reason I couldn't shoot straight that day! Sorry!
After the tour I had lunch in the park with the girls and then we went back to the hotel to grab our stuff and leave.
Everything in the trip had gone smoothly until when we were at the train station and they changed the platform on us and we missed our train! Luckily we were allowed to get on the next one which was only an hour later with no extra cost.
Also, while at the station I had my first Pasty! A pasty is...well basically envision a really crispy flaky top of a chicken pot pie and then envision that as a calzone and filled with chicken and mushrooms. That is what I had for dinner. It was pretty good.
Sunday 4/6
I woke up and booked a flight to Rome for spring break and then Jake and I went out for lunch. We went to Posh Fish! which was pretty good. I got fish and chips again with mushy peas (they tasted like pea soup) and it restored my faith in fish and chips. Then just did homework and planned spring break. That night we watched Wolf of Wall street.
Monday 4/7
Nothing special happened besides that in my history class we visited Magdalen College which was really pretty. Oh and went on another tour in Oxford according to another book (Jude the Obscure) that takes place in Oxford and saw different places I haven't visited yet.
Tuesday 4/8
Class today again, went to the pub after class (Still have bee to every pub only once! Haven't gone back to a single pub), then came home and had dinner. Now I have been packing for Paris! I am leaving for Paris tomorrow! I am pretty nervous but I am so freakin' excited for Paris though! All the food that I am going to get fat from and the smells and sights! I will be returning Sunday night.
These past few weeks have been non-stop and these next two or three weeks are going to be insane also due to Paris this weekend, having class for only 2 days and then a week from tomorrow ( which is April 16th) I leave for Italy. With this being said I am not entirely sure if I will have time to blog so here is my schedule!
Paris 4/9- 4/13
Rome 4/16-4/20
Florence 4/20-4/24
Venice 4/24-4/26
Hope I will be able to blog next week! But if not I will be blogging in a couple weeks! Over and out.
I am SO GLAD you said something about Pillars of the Earth! :D I loved the series and the book. The architecture is amazing in those photos! Love it and you! Can't wait for more from your journey to France and Italy. <3
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures as we're getting a good flavor of your experience. Keep 'em comin and we know that you'll blog when you can. Thanks for sharing your busy schedule with all of us - I'm jealous! Would love to be there, too.
